In order to lose weight do you need to subtract 500 calories from daily caloric intake ?
I'm confused. Some say not to count calories at all, some say you only need 1600 calories (I'd die if I ate so little calories)......so who is right ?? What is the best way to lose weight and STILL get all your daily caloric requirements of protein, carbs, vegetables, calcium, etc, etc ???? The weight is 225 pounds and the weight loss desired is 80 pounds.

- Mathematically, those who espouse the calorie method claim that one pound of fat equals 3500 calories. Therefore, if you reduce your calorie intake by 500 per day, you should lose 1 pound per week. You can reduce your calorie intake by 1000 calories per day, and lose 2 pounds per week. Most "experts" say not to lose faster than that - at most 2 pounds per week. Generally a combination of food reducation and exercise works best, and also to do something you can keep doing for the rest of your life so you don't gain the weight back once your "diet" is over. Something that works for many people is to eat just as MUCH food but make different choices - that is, carrot sticks as a snack instead of potato chips, an apple instead of a piece of applie pie for desert, etc.
